Frequently Asked Questions
Which service is right for me?
You do not need to know exactly which service you need before contacting us. We can discuss what has brought you to the practice, the difficulties you are experiencing and what you hope to achieve, then help you identify the most appropriate next step.
Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?
No. You can begin psychological therapy without an ADHD, autism or other formal diagnosis. Therapy is based on your individual experiences, needs and goals rather than on whether you already have a diagnosis.
Do you work with children and adults?
Yes. Joanne Wright Psychology supports children, young people, adults, parents and families. The approach and structure of the service are adapted to the person’s age, circumstances, communication needs and goals.
Are appointments available online?
Online and telephone appointments may be available depending on the service and your individual needs. This can also provide a practical alternative where travel, location or accessibility makes attending the practice difficult.
What happens during the first appointment?
The first appointment is an opportunity to discuss your current concerns, relevant background information and what you would like support with. Joanne will explain the available options, answer your questions and agree the most suitable way forward with you.
How long are therapy sessions?
Therapy sessions are usually arranged for a set appointment time, commonly around 50 minutes, although this may vary depending on the service and individual circumstances. The expected session length will be confirmed when your appointment is arranged.
How many therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies because every person’s circumstances and goals are different. Some people benefit from short-term focused work, while others need longer-term support. Progress and the ongoing plan will be reviewed collaboratively.
What does an ADHD or autism assessment involve?
An assessment usually involves gathering detailed information about development, current experiences and functioning across different areas of life. Depending on the person’s age and circumstances, this may include interviews, questionnaires, observations and information from parents, schools or other professionals.
Will I receive a written report after an assessment?
Yes. Following an ADHD or autism assessment, you will receive clear feedback and a written report explaining the findings, conclusions and practical recommendations for home, education, work or everyday life.
What is post-diagnostic support?
Post-diagnostic support helps individuals and families understand what an ADHD or autism diagnosis means in practical terms. It can include identifying strengths and needs, developing helpful strategies, improving communication and planning suitable support at home, in education, at work and in relationships.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes. Joanne works with Bupa, AXA Health and Aviva for eligible insurer-funded psychological therapy. You will need to contact your insurer before booking, confirm your cover and obtain an authorisation code.
What happens if I need to cancel?
We understand that life can be unpredictable, but we normally require at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange an appointment. Late cancellations may be charged because the appointment time has been reserved specifically for you.
How do I pay for appointments?
Self-funded appointments are paid by bank transfer. Payment should normally be received at least 48 hours before the scheduled session to confirm the appointment.
Is the practice accessible?
The practice is situated on the first floor and does not currently have step-free access. Where this creates an accessibility difficulty, online or telephone appointments can be arranged when appropriate.
Is everything I discuss confidential?
Your privacy and confidentiality are taken seriously. Information is handled in accordance with professional standards and data-protection requirements. The limited circumstances in which confidentiality may need to be broken, such as a serious safeguarding concern, will be explained clearly at the beginning of your work together.
